Coming out of this terminal
Terminal 1 is where most of Cologne Bonn happens. Thirteen gates, the larger check-in area, and the mix of scheduled and low-cost traffic that gives this airport its unusual shape — a full-service carrier and a budget one arriving within minutes of each other into the same hall.
It is a genuinely small building by hub standards, and the walk from the aircraft door to the kerb is short. What Cologne Bonn is really known for is the hours: it is one of the few German airports with no night flight ban on cargo, and the passenger schedule pushes early and late in a way that leaves you arriving into a very quiet terminal at 05:30 or 23:40.
Outside, the forecourt gives ten free minutes once per day and then charges €8 for a quarter of an hour, which is a steep step. Car parks P20 and P1 serve this terminal at about €5 per half hour, and P1K on the ground floor of the P1 garage puts you closest to the arrivals hall.
Where your driver stands
Your driver waits inside Terminal 1 arrivals with a name sign, having taken the terminal from your flight number rather than from your booking form.
The late and early arrivals are where this matters most. At 05:30 there is no queue of taxis to fall back on, the rank is thin, and the difference between a pre-booked car and an improvised one is not comfort — it is whether you get out of the airport at all.
If you land at a different terminal
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 sit on the same access road and are a short walk apart, so landing at the other one costs a few minutes and nothing else. Neither adds anything to your fare. We take the terminal from the live flight, so in practice the driver is already at the right one before you are through baggage reclaim.
FAQ
Questions about this terminal
Which airlines use Terminal 1 at Cologne Bonn?
Lufthansa, Eurowings, Austrian and Ryanair are the main ones, alongside 13 gates’ worth of scheduled and low-cost traffic. Terminal 2 takes the remaining carriers.
Where does my driver meet me at Terminal 1?
Inside the arrivals hall with a name sign, not at the rank outside. The terminal is taken from your flight number, so a change of aircraft or gate does not change where you are met.
What does it cost to stop outside Terminal 1?
Ten minutes are free once per day on the terminal approach, and after that a quarter of an hour costs €8. Car parks P20 and P1 are about €5 per half hour, and P1K on the ground floor of P1 is the shortest walk to arrivals.
Is a transfer worth it on an early or late Cologne flight?
That is exactly when it is worth it. Cologne Bonn’s schedule runs unusually early and late, and at 05:30 or midnight the rank is thin and the train service is at its sparsest. A car that is already there and already priced is a different proposition at that hour than at noon.
