Should you take the train instead? Often, yes. A little over an hour by train against about an hour and a half by road, on one of the busiest short intercity corridors in eastern Germany. Bridge work near Riesa disrupted this line in early summer 2026; it finished in July. The fastest scheduled ICE is 68 minutes. We would rather say that than sell you the wrong journey. A car wins on a specific and fairly narrow set of trips: three or more of you, where four rail fares stop being cheaper than one vehicle; real luggage, instruments, sample cases or ski bags; a start or finish that is nowhere near a Hauptbahnhof, which quietly adds two local legs to a rail journey; a departure before the first train or after the last; or a schedule where a missed connection costs more than the fare does.
